Before Applying

Important information about the application process is provided in a Q&A format.
Please read it carefully to avoid submitting an incomplete application.

Eligibility

Who is eligible to apply?

Eligible applicants must be enrolled in an academic institute or a company at the time of application throughout the program period. High school students are not eligible.

Both the internship and lecture courses require on-site attendance. Applicants must ensure that they can travel and participate in the entire program on-site (no shortened period).

Fees & Costs

Is there a registration fee?

The program is free of charge. There are no registration fees.

Program requirements

What are the requirements to fulfill during the program?

Internship course (Plan A)

  • Attend and actively participate in all necessary laboratory activities throughout the courses.
  • Present a poster of your research at your home institution for the purpose of scientific interaction during the lecture course week (mandatory).
  • Attend the Neuroethics workshop in the lecture schedule.
  • Give a presentation on your internship research work at the end of the course.
  • Submit the course survey at the conclusion of the internship.

Note: The internship program must fall within the designated period (2 months, June 9–August 7, 2026) and is not flexibly adjusted to your convenience.

Lecture course (Plan B)

  • Participate in all scheduled activities throughout the lecture course.
  • Present a poster of your research at your current institution for the purpose of scientific interaction (mandatory).
  • Submit the course survey at the conclusion of the lecture course.

Note: For both the Internship course (Plan A) and the Lecture course (Plan B),
failure to fulfill these requirements will result in the denial of financial support and the issuance of a certificate of attendance.

Financial support & travel

What kind of financial support does the CBS Summer Program offer?

The CBS Summer Program provides limited financial support to participants whose requests for financial support have been approved.

Please note: There will be no salary supplement or support for food expenses.

Approved participants may receive the following support:

  • Round-trip airfare or bullet train (Shinkansen) fare
  • Accommodation during the program period

Airfare and domestic transportation must be purchased by the participant in advance. Reimbursement will be made after the required documents are submitted upon return to your country.

Note: There is a maximum reimbursement amount for airfare and transportation for each region. Therefore, please note that we may not be able to reimburse the full amount.

Note: Participants who receive any salary or other financial support are not eligible for financial support under this program.

Note: Participants who do not submit a financial support request, or whose request is not approved, will not be reimbursed for any travel or accommodation expenses.

Participants must follow RIKEN’s travel itinerary and regulations. Any additional costs incurred due to personal travel arrangements must be paid by the participant.

More detailed information about financial support and travel arrangements will be provided after you have been qualified for the program.

Deadlines & documents

When is the submission deadline?

The application submission deadline is January 7, 2026 at 9:00 AM (JST).

All required documents, including letters of recommendation, must be submitted by this deadline.

How do I submit letters of recommendation?

You need to provide the contact information for your recommender in the application form.
Your recommender will receive instructions to submit the letter.

Please ensure that your recommender submits the letter by the application deadline.
(January 7, 2026 at 9:00 AM (JST)).

Selection & after acceptance

When will I be notified of the selection results?

Selection results will be announced around the middle of February.
Notifications will be sent to the email address you provided in your application.

Is my enrolment ensured when I receive an acceptance notification?

Receiving an acceptance notification does not automatically guarantee your enrolment in the program.

In some cases, a visa may not be granted in a timely manner due to political issues or the current global situation, which may prevent you from participating in the program.

Please also note that RIKEN’s travel policy does not support travel arrangements for participants who do not belong to an institute or university during the Summer Program period.

Application rules

Can I apply for more than one course?

Only one application per person will be considered for review.

If multiple applications are submitted by the same person, only the most recently submitted application will be regarded as valid.

If you wish to apply for both the Internship course (Plan A) and the Lecture course (Plan B), please select "Both" in the Plan section of the application form instead of submitting multiple applications.
