Abstract
Immuniception: how the brain records and regulates immunity
The idea that the mind affects the body is as old as medicine itself, yet modern science is only beginning to understand the mechanisms that make it possible. Our research aims to uncover these mechanisms through the brain's dialogue with the immune system, the organism's principal defense mechanism. We term this capacity of the brain to represent and regulate the state of the immune system "immunoception." In this talk, I will present findings on how the brain, and specifically the insular cortex, encodes and retrieves specific inflammatory states, what inputs are required to form these representations, and how the resulting signals are conveyed to the periphery to shape immune responses. This emerging research field has implications for psychosomatic disorders and autoimmune conditions such as Crohn's disease, and opens the possibility of harnessing brain-immune circuits for therapeutic benefit.
