Research field

The RIKEN Center for Brain Science (CBS) is Japan's premier neuroscience research center that builds on the twenty years of research achievements of its predecessor, the RIKEN Brain Science Institute (BSI). Taking advantage of the multidisciplinarity of the fields of medicine, biology, chemistry, engineering, mathematical sciences, and psychology, our aim is to advance basic research on the functions of the brain and the mind—from the levels of single cells and whole organisms to societal systems—and develop innovative technologies in the process. We also aim to find solutions to the issues confronting contemporary society, as we grapple with the psychological ramifications of our own inventions such as artificial intelligence (AI) and big data, and as we seek to conquer diseases such as depression and dementia.

Job description

The successful candidate will hold a research management position, and as the head of a laboratory, s/he will provide leadership and guidance to laboratory members to conduct research. The laboratory will join the project entitled “Brain Mapping by Integrated Neurotechnologies for Disease Studies (Brain/MINDS)” to develop techniques to determine the connectivity between regions/specific sites of the marmoset brain based on tracer data, diffusion tensor image data, and resting-state functional MRI data. The laboratory will also develop techniques to map the distribution of gene expression on the marmoset digital brain atlas.


  • University graduates with PhD, although doctoral degrees are not a prerequisite
  • Ability to conduct world-class research and to contribute to promotion of a Brain/MINDS project by taking advantage of the excellent research environments of CBS and RIKEN
  • Possess leadership skills and management ability in the laboratory and the research community

Salary and benefits

  1. A renewable one-year fixed-term employment contract to a maximum of the end of fiscal year 2023 (March 31, 2024) , with annual evaluation.
  2. RIKEN may adjust the above maximum period of renewability based on a) the employee’s abilities, work load at the time of contract completion, performance and work attitude and b) the continuation of the employee’s center, laboratory or project and RIKEN’s management situation and budget at the time. Contract renewal will not be considered in the case of termination of Brain/MINDS project, should it occur prior to March 31, 2024. In principle, employment contracts will not be renewed for individuals older than 65 years.
  3. The employee’s period of fixed-term employment cannot exceed 10 years from the initial date of hire (or 10 years from April 1, 2013 for fixed-term employees already at RIKEN prior to this date).

In principle, there will be a trial period of employment (2 months).
Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Commuting and housing allowances will be provided. Social insurance will be applied. Mandatory membership in the RIKEN Mutual Benefit Society (RIKEN Kyosaikai).
Work hours: 9:00 to 17:20 (lunch break 12:00 to 12:50). Supervisors may instruct employees to work outside of these hours.
Days off include public holidays, New Year's holidays (Dec. 29 - Jan 3), and RIKEN Foundation Day.
These and other provisions are in accordance with RIKEN regulations.
