Faculty Position in technical development and support for electron microscopy


The RIKEN Center for Brain Science (CBS) is seeking an outstanding scientist for a Unit Leader position in the field of electron microscopy. As the head of Support Unit for Electron Microscopy Techniques, the successful candidate will be in charge of the Unit and maintain, manage and operate electron microscopes to provide high-quality technical support to CBS researchers. S/he is also expected to develop new technologies related to electron microscopy with assigned technical staff members.

The successful candidate will start in a fixed-term position (equivalent to US assistant professor, 10 years at maximum depending on evaluation) but are eligible to apply for open calls for indefinite-term Unit Leader positions, which are subject to RIKEN’s mandatory retirement age of 60 followed by reemployment program until age of 65.


Applications and letters of recommendation must arrive by 5 pm on December 20, 2021 (Japan time).

Applicants should submit the electronic files of a cover letter with a brief summary of their research program and plan, curriculum vitae, a list of research achievements and publications, a list of acquired research funding, research achievements and technical development and support to date, future plans for technical development and support, reprints of five major publications maximum, and necessary details (name, e-mail address, and relation with the applicant) about each of three referees, through the application form. One of the three referees should be the current supervisor, if available. Please ask the three referees to follow the instruction e-mail that will be automatically sent to them to provide a recommendation letter. The letters should be signed by the person writing the letter and addressed to Dr. Hiroshi Matsumoto, the President of RIKEN. All files and recommendation letters should be written in English.
